A few weeks after Roy died, I went back and read Eight Hours For What We Will. It begins with the description of how Emma Goldman, Alexander Berkman, and Modiste Aronstamm opened an ice-cream parlor and lunchroom in Worcester, hoping that the profits would provide financial support for the return to their native Russia. But then, in the summer of 1892, the Carnegie Steel Company locked out the workers at its Homestead plant, and evicted strikers from company houses. Goldman and Berkman, hoping that the class struggle in the United States would finally take off, thought the day had come and the “native toiler had risen.” They left Worcester and the ice-cream parlor, went to Homestead, and Berkman went on with his unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Henry Clay Frick, the chairman of the Carnegie Steel company. Roy noted that, however, despite their dedication to the Homestead workers, Berkman’s and Goldman’s “understanding of the American proletariat remained limited.” Berkman remained preoccupied with the situation in Russia, and Goldman, at least in her reminiscences, largely seemed to have ignored the situation of the workers in Worcester. In a way, as a historian, Roy picked up where Emma Goldman and Sasha Berkman had left off, and he went back to the ice cream parlor and back to the workers in Worcester, and showed that that they mattered, the ice-cream-parlor, the workers, and their eight hours for what we will, even though Worcester wasn’t exactly the revolutionary hot-spot of the time. And, working at George Mason University in Fairfax County, Virginia, which, as Mike O’Malley had pointed out at the OAH, started as a branch college of the University of Virginia and which, to this day, is not exactly known as a radical hot-spot, Roy approached his students as a teacher with a similar interest, respect and consideration of circumstances as he approached the workers in Worcester as a historian.
When dealing with the students at Mason, both the masters and the doctoral students, most of whom work part or full-time outside campus while getting their degrees, and many of whom don’t plan on pursuing traditional careers in university teaching, Roy was not only supportive, but always considerate of economy and circumstances. He picked people up where they stood, and practical questions greatly mattered to him. He wasn’t only concerned about how can you write a really good research paper or a dissertation, but how you can do it if you work x-hours during the week and the archives with your research materials are only open 9-5 during the week. Indeed, he sometimes indicated that such practical considerations were among the reasons why he was so interested in the possibilities of the internet in making research materials available online.
Roy sometimes mentioned that he had never really gotten that much out of his formal university education himself, and that the most important thing during his time as a graduate student had been the access to the library, and the chance to meet and study with numerous of his fellow students and friends, many of whom have shared stories and memories on this website or at the memorials in Arlington, at the AHA, or at the OAH. Whether it was driven by his experiences at Harvard, by his New Left radicalism, by his anti-authoritarian attitude toward professorial authority, by the belief that higher education should be accessible to everyone, or by something else, I got the sense that he thought (and I think I remember that he even said it at one point) that studying history, when it comes down to it, doesn’t really require that much and not necessarily a university and a professor, that, instead, all it really takes is your interest, a library card, nowadays a computer with internet access, and some people with whom you can talk or correspond, whether or not they have a formal degree. And he brought this moment of reflection about his role, about authority, and about the sense of formal education, into the classroom and into his interactions with his students, and served as a facilitator rather than as the instructing authority. He was particularly good at facilitating discussions, which he moderated with a keen sense of fairness -- if someone didn’t get the chance to say anything or needed a little support, he often sensed that, said something supportive, or just gave people a little more time and opportunity to speak up. Roy managed to open up the classroom, with its often alienating rules and regulations, and to turn it into a pleasant opportunity to get together -- he provided space, structure, and ideas, and everybody could meet, discuss, build websites, watch movies, have guests, and, of course, eat and drink.
Clio Wired, the course on history and new media that Roy developed and taught, and which I took in the fall of 2001, perfectly reflected his spirit that everyone should help each other: ”Unlike a conventional class where almost all the advice and assistance comes from the instructor, in a seminar everyone will take a hand in shaping our discussions and helping fellow class members,” he had written in the online syllabus, http://chnm.gmu.edu/courses/rr/f01/cw/, a work in progress that he frequently updated. The course was, “experimental,” and he advised that, “we need to be open to changes in schedule, format, and requirements.” There was always a moment of curiosity and excitement in his assignments – do the scavenger hunt, explore this site, check out that online community, spend a significant amount of time at a website of your choice. In his assignments, in the questions he posed, he often offered options, as if he didn’t want to constrain his students to his suggestions -- if you don’t want to do this, try that, if not that, try something else. Including your own ideas for assignments was usually an option, too. I didn’t get the impression he ever came up with any assignments that he didn’t like to do as well. In more than one way, he also didn’t want to constrain the students to the classroom, and I remember one night when he must have thought that we all seemed knocked out by the computer lab, and when, in the middle of the class, he said let’s get up and go next door, and we all walked out of the classroom and sat down in the adjacent room, just to continue our discussion in a different environment.
Roy, as busy as he always was, regularly attended the PhD colloquium, which was entirely voluntary for faculty members, and, I think, he always attended when students presented their dissertation proposals and offered suggestions, whether he was the dissertation advisor of the students who presented or not. Last fall, he served as the coordinating instructor of the colloquium until he died. Before taking over as the instructor in the fall semester, he had sent out a survey to all of us PhD students to collect feedback on the colloquium, making sure that he planned the sessions together with us, and not for us. I think as one of the results of the feedback he received, he set up a blog for the colloquium (together with Jeremy Boggs of the CHNM), so that we could have and extend our discussions online. Very much Roy, he put technology to its best use and served as facilitator and host, online as well as offline. When he was too ill to come to the colloquium, he continued to post questions on the blog, once again always offering options, thinking of what we and he might enjoy to do. And I remember the last colloquium he was able to attend, with filmmaker (and Mason professor) Carma Hinton, as the guest, and we were talking about historical documentaries, and he was really interested in the discussion and then said that he feels like going out and seeing all those movies...So, in his spirit, I fill up my Thanks, Roy mug with coffee, drink it in his memory, go see a movie, and look forward to the next refill.

ROSENZWEIG--Roy, The staff and board members of The American Social History Project (CUNY) mourn the passing of our cherished collaborator, advisor, and friend. A distinguished historian, visionary educator, lifelong radical, and supportive comrade, Roy counseled us in times of need and was our indispensable partner, board member, and co-author for more than a quarter-century. From our ''Who Built America?'' books, documentaries, and CDROMs through our many Web collaborations, Roy was our intellectual anchor and our inspirational and kind taskmaster. He has left his indelible mark on the field of history, democratic education, digital scholarship -and in our hearts. We send our deepest sympathy to Roy's wife Deborah, his family, and to his many colleagues in the History Department and Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.

This isn't a story exactly, it's some observations. There are lots of comments here about Roy's courtesy and thoughtfulness and kindness, his generosity. He had all those things to a really remarkable degree: that's all true.
But he wasn't exactly self-effacing. Roy was relentless at getting what he wanted. He worked away and worked away on all fronts at once, and I realized early on that if Roy wanted something A: he was usually right about it, and B: he would not quit till it happened. He was mentally tough and tenacious, but he was also wise and smart and saw a couple moves ahead of most people, so there was almost always point C: it's going to benefit a lot of other people, you might as well get on board. That's not self-effacing, it's something more interesting and unique.
Also although Roy was a very strategically patient at getting what he wanted he was basically an extremely impatient guy. He was pretty good at concealing it but he got impatient easily and he generally responded to impatience by multitasking. The laptop was practically invented for Roy, so he could do email when meetings got slow.
He was scathingly funny when someone really irritated him. It was easy to get him mildly irritated, although his basic kindness mediated it. But when he got really bugged he was pretty funny about it. He was especially irritated by mindless adherence to procedure and by moments when stubborn tradition shut down ideas
Roy had no taste at all for formality and he was never, ever, pompous or haughty. He was more likely to be distracted and slightly oblivious except when you had his full attention, in which case he was all the things people say he was. I remember telling my parents about Roy and saying that you'll ever know, when you meet him, what a big deal he is. There was no self-promotion. He promoted the work, and the work he did was almost always done in community with others
He was extremely skeptical about the profession--about snobbery masquerading as standards, about the bubble reputation, about the ways the familiar often obscured the talent. Lot of people feel ambivalent about their profession, but Roy's skepticism never turned into alienation, and he never stopped working to improve custom he thought were useless and corrupt.
That to me is the most admirable thing about Roy--not that he was some kind of saint, not his many gifts, but that although he was an impatient, often single minded and stubborn, driven guy, he learned how to blend those qualities and turn them into community, instead of selfishness. He was flawed like we all are but he was an unusually morally conscious man, and keenly aware of how to make his weaknesses useful to all those around him

Like so many, I have tales to tell about Roy's generosity and intellect and unflagging, mind-boggling work ethic. I first met Roy at the beginning of my second year in graduate school; during my first year, two other students (Elena Razlogova and John Spencer) and I had developed rudimentary history cd-roms. Elena had gone on to study with Roy at GMU (and become CHNM's first employee), and as a result, John and I had been invited down to present our cd-roms at a brown bag lunch event at GMU's history department. Elena met us at the train station, and as we exited into the Washington sunlight, she led us toward a car driven by a slightly rumpled, distracted looking guy in a red button down shirt and black jeans. As the car pulled away from the curb, John and I realized that this was Roy Rosenzweig. *The* Roy Rosenzweig, respected scholar, one of the only people doing the kind of digital history to which we aspired. And he was picking up two unknown graduate students at the train station. It was an entirely appropriate way to begin; he exhibited particular generosity to those low on the academic food chain. I came to know Roy in more venues after that first day; through the <i>Radical History Review<i>, where I served as Managing Editor for two years, and through the American Social History Project, where I had the enormous privilege of working with him on a myriad of projects. While in no way officially connected with my doctoral education, Roy became a true mentor, introducing me to people I should know, and the first person I turned to for career advice.
There is so much that I will remember about Roy: his keen editorial eye (the quickest way to improve every grant proposal I ever wrote for ASHP was to run a draft past Roy); his ability to move projects forward; his deep reservoir of odd historical facts, handy for historical timelines and puzzles; the certainty that an email message to him would be returned within a matter of hours; his endearingly awkward half hugs of greeting. I'm still only barely able to acknowledge that he isn't going to be around any more, that there won't be some new project or meeting or meal at a conference or email message passing along information about a project or person I should know about. I hope that Roy had some idea of how very many people admired and loved and valued him. I guess what we do now is carry on in his spirit, the only alternative we have to carrying on in his presence.

I can’t remember how or exactly when I met Roy. I imagine it was at the MARHO table at the AHA, sometime in the late 1970s when I was finishing my PhD. Sue Porter Benson might have introduced us, or perhaps I had just signed up to sit at the table the same time as he did. He seemed always to be at the MARHO table then, before he started serving on every committee in sight. In those days, there were a lot of leftist men who hadn’t quite gotten the gist of feminism, but Roy was a welcome exception. Just when I was about to utter some universal complaint about macho leftists or about one more session on labor history that failed to consider women or gender, Roy would pop into my head. Then I’d have to take a deep breath and realize that there were a few good men.
It wasn’t just that Roy acknowledged women’s history. He also embraced what I thought of as feminist process, though he didn’t articulate his style in those terms, or any terms--he just got things done in an incredibly collaborative and unassuming way. I remember especially a moment in 1991, when we served together on the OAH Program Committee. There were lots of proposals for complete sessions that year and a big stack of single paper proposals as well. Most of the committee was willing to focus on the complete sessions and only move to the single papers if we really needed to add speakers or sessions. But Roy cornered me at the first coffee break and said we should volunteer to go through all the single proposals and create sessions because otherwise lots of graduate students and young faculty who didn’t have the networks to produce full sessions would get lost. So we did just that—and it yielded some great sessions. On so many occasions like this one, Roy did the invisible work that makes such a difference and refused any special acknowledgement for his efforts. He was a mensch.
Around the same time, I was serving as an outside reviewer for The Park and the People. In that capacity, I discovered that Roy’s passion for collaboration was just as strong when it came to research. Roy (and his co-author, Betsy Blackmar) actually seemed excited to get suggestions for revisions. I think this was the first time that I let a press give out my name to the authors of a manuscript, and they were so appreciative of my comments that I foolishly thought their response was typical. (I soon learned otherwise, but I was forever grateful that they had taken my ideas seriously. It gave me greater faith in my critical abilities and served as a model for how to embrace criticisms and suggestions about my own work.)
In addition to Roy’s generosity and collaborative spirit, he was excellent at persuading people to take on extra work for a good cause since he was always doing more than his share. The point was reinforced over and over again as I crossed paths with Roy in MARHO, the OAH, the ASA, History Matters, and especially, the American Social History Project. When I was recruited to join the ASHP group revising Who Built America? in the mid-1990s, it was Roy who called. I was overwhelmed with commitments of various kinds at the time and would have turned anyone else down. But Roy always seemed to be juggling more obligations than anyone else and doing it so well. Plus, he was listened so carefully to my concerns and anxieties that by the end of the phone call, I’d said yes. I’m glad I did.
Joining the WBA? circle gave me the chance to collaborate with Roy—and Steve, Josh, Chris, Nelson, Susan, Ellen, and Pennee. This was a project that highlighted Roy’s intellectual and technological creativity and his amazing ability to find humor in the midst of crisis and chaos. As we await publication of the third edition, I still expect an email from Roy to pop up in my inbox. (I’ve studied the nineteenth-century “spiritual telegraph,” and if anyone can get it to work, it’s Roy.) Like so many of us, it’s hard for me to think about a world without Roy. But then we don’t quite have to since he’s still present in so many places—in books and websites and digital archives; in the ways we think about research, writing, and collaboration; in the tools we use to teach; in our commitments to history as politics; and of course, in our hearts.

Of all the amazing qualities Roy possessed -- intelligence, generosity, creativity, industry, wit, and so many more -- the one that always stood out for me was trust. Roy trusted in history. He trusted in hard work. He trusted in fairness. Most of all, he trusted in people.
Roy was a collaborator. He was brilliant on his own, but I think he was happiest and at his best when he was working with other people. And people flocked to him.
I think Roy was able to gather so many friends and colleagues around him because he trusted them, often without prior cause and always without prejudice, and so people trusted him back. Roy showed us that the way to gain trust is to give trust, which is the same thing as saying that the way to be loved is to love. It's the best work lesson and the best life lesson I have ever learned, and Roy was the best teacher.
I trust and love and miss him very much.
