Rosenzweig, Roy
ROY A. ROSENZWEIG 1950-2007 Loved dearly by his wife, the Rosenzweig, Schkrutz, and Kaplan families and by many, many others, Roy Rosenzweig died of lung cancer on October 11, 2007. He began his career as an innovative social and labor historian and became a pioneer in public history and new media. Recognizing digital technology's potential to "democratize history-to incorporate multiple voices, reach diverse audiences, and encourage popular participation in presenting and preserving the past," he founded the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University in 1994. Today it has over 40 employees and several grant-funded and award-winning projects. Impressive as his professional achievements were, he was just as widely admired for his personal qualities: his intelligence, vitality, wit, creativity, optimism, common sense, and generosity. Friendship and collaborative projects gave meaning to his life and work. His death is a blow to all who knew him. To read-or write-about him, go to www.thanksroy.org . In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Center for History and New Media. Make checks payable to the George Mason University Foundation, 4400 University Dr., MS 1A3, Fairfax, VA 22030. Please note that your gift is for the CHNM. A celebration of Rosenzweig's life wil be held on the afternoon of December 9 at the GMU Law School in Arlington, VA 22201.
